Decorating your home is an exciting journey of self-expression and creativity. However, it can also be overwhelming, especially when you're trying to communicate your vision and style to an interior designer. Fortunately, there's a simple yet powerful approach that can help align your tastes and preferences - starting with one prized possession. This single item can serve as a guiding beacon, allowing your interior designer to understand your vision and create a space that truly reflects your personality.

When I met these @designtonik clients they only had this antique Medalist Brunswick pool table that once belonged to Adam Levin to start with. We knew we wanted to recover it from the standard green and originally chose a gorgeous blue cloth from Italy. Unfortunately since Madonna (not kidding) took the last of the blue cloth for her antique Brunswick table, we had to wait for almost a year and it never arrived. We ended up recovering it in this dusty rose to play off of the B&W, blues and grays. After all, it is more of a piece of art and should stand out! Can't wait till we add the art!

Adam Levin's old NYC loft as seen in Elle Decor. Such a huge difference with the new cloth!

The inspiration image was this incredible home of Kelly Wearstler. The perfect mix of antique modern and art.

Here are 5 reasons why starting with a prized possession is so powerful.

1. Reflecting Your Personality

That one prized possession you hold dear is more than just an object; it's a reflection of your personality and the things that inspire you. Whether it's a unique piece of art, a treasured heirloom, or a special souvenir from your travels, this item carries sentimental value and embodies your style in a meaningful way. By sharing this prized possession with your interior designer, you provide them with a glimpse into your world, enabling them to curate a space that resonates with your character.

2. Establishing a Focal Point

In interior design, having a focal point is crucial to creating a visually appealing and cohesive space. Your prized possession can serve as that central element, around which the entire design scheme revolves. Your designer can use its colors, textures, and themes to inspire the overall palette and style of the room, ensuring a harmonious look that centers on what you love most.

3. Bridging Communication Gaps

Describing your style and preferences with words can sometimes be challenging, as design concepts can be abstract and subjective. However, presenting your interior designer with a tangible object that represents your taste simplifies the communication process. It helps your designer understand your aesthetics on a deeper level and translates your ideas into actionable design choices.

4. Inspiring Creative Interpretation

Your prized possession acts as a catalyst for creativity, sparking new ideas and interpretations for your interior designer. It can inspire innovative ways to incorporate its essence into the overall design while complementing other elements within the space. This creative process ensures that the final design truly reflects your style and vision, making your home uniquely yours.

5. Enhancing Emotional Connection

A well-designed home should evoke emotions and make you feel at ease. By infusing your space with the essence of your prized possession, you cultivate a sense of emotional connection to your surroundings. Every time you walk into that room, you're reminded of the cherished item and the memories it holds, creating a space that feels comforting and genuine.

I love when my clients start with one prized possession! It can be an invaluable step in establishing a strong foundation for my client's home design. It offers a glimpse into their style, personality, and inspirations to help me create a space that truly represents my client.

This special piece becomes a thread that weaves throughout the design, resulting in a home that is not only visually appealing but deeply meaningful.
